Man gets 15 months for federal crimes after stealing from bank
By KevinMarcilliat, In Federal Crimes, 0 CommentsA North Carolina man has been sentenced to 15 months’ prison time after he was convicted of stealing more than $140,000 from a bank vault. That man, age 21, had been an employee with an armored car service at the time of the federal crimes. He has also been sentenced to repay the money and serve two years’ worth of court-mandated supervision. The man had pleaded guilty to bank theft in March 2013. He was sentenced in Charlotte, North Carolina, on May 21.
The defendant in this case remains free on bond. He is waiting for officials to determine the federal facility where he will serve his time. He will be required to report to the facility when that decision is made. It is important to remember that this man, like all other federal convicts, will serve his time without possibility of parole. A criminal defense attorney may be able to help these defendants understand more about their sentences.
Investigators say the man was employed with the armored car company from 2005 until 2012. He worked as a messenger, driver and vault custodian, during which time he had access to bank vaults. Authorities say that the thefts occurred between December 2011 and April 2012 as the man was working as a vault custodian. In the course of those duties, the man took more than $140,000 from the service. Those thefts took place on six separate occasions, according to officers.
The man was accused of taking advantage of a delay that was used while technicians were changing security tapes. The man’s duties as a vault custodian included managing bank vault cash storage. He apparently took the money out of sealed bags in the vault while the cameras were deactivated. He then resealed the bags. Authorities say the man used the money to pay off a second mortgage on his home and purchase some personal vehicles.
