Nine Indicted of Fraud for Role in Staged Car Accidents

Nine close friends and family members were indicted on insurance fraud charges after allegedly staging car accidents. The nine people are from both North Carolina and South Carolina. They were indicted on the fraud charges in a Polk County grand jury and are scheduled to appear November 30.

The North Carolina Department of Insurance investigated the possible insurance fraud for two years, in conjunction with investigations by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, Polk County and Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Offices and local police departments. All nine individuals were arrested on September 8 for their involvement in the alleged fraud scheme.

Based on the indictments, the suspects range in age from 17 to 56 years old. For their role in the insurance fraud scheme, the nine have been charged with the following types of crimes:

  • Obtaining property by false pretenses
  • Insurance fraud
  • Attempting to obtain property by false pretenses
  • Felony conspiracy
  • Continuing a criminal enterprise

The charges are all related to the staged car accident scheme they allegedly participated in. According to law enforcement officers, the nine people defrauded Geico, Allstate and other insurance companies out of more than $100,000.
